Come Early, Stay LateA Passion for Sports Tampa Bay is the only city in history to ever win the National Football League championship and the Arena Football League championship in the same year - with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers victory at Super Bowl XXXVII in January 2003 and the Tampa Bay Storm’s Arena Bowl win in June 2003. Also, Tampa Bay won the Stanley Cup just 18 months after the Super Bowl victory. Detroit and Denver are the only other two cities to hold NFL, NHL and AFL titles, and no other city has won those titles within such a tight timeframe as Tampa Bay. Tampa has hosted four Super Bowls: Super Bowl XVIII in 1984, the Super Bowl XXV anniversary game in 1991 during the Gulf War, Super Bowl XXXV in 2001 and Super Bowl XLIII in 2009. Only three other cities (New Orleans, Miami and Los Angeles) have hosted more Super Bowls. Also, the Tampa Bay Storm holds the record for most Arena Bowl victories, having won the AFL championship in 1991, 1993, 1995, 1996 and 2003. Additionally, the NCAA Frozen Four will take place in Tampa in 2012. Recreation - Tampa Style Known as the world’s longest continuous sidewalk, Bayshore Boulevard borders Tampa Bay for 4.5 consecutive miles. Joggers, walkers, skaters and bikers frequent it throughout the year. The scenic and sometimes busy venue is quite the meeting place for leisure and the competitive athletes. Beautiful Bayshore Boulevard was named one of AAA’s “Top Roads” for its panoramic view, park-like setting and architectural features to accommodate motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. More than 200 species of fish are found in Tampa Bay, including popular sport fish like tarpon, snook, speckled sea trout, redfish, cobia, pompano, permit, triple tails, mangrove snapper, Spanish mackerel, jack crevalle, king fish and small grouper. Golf Digest named Tampa - St. Petersburg - Clearwater the #3 best urban city for golf in 2002. The magazine ranked the cities by number of courses per capita and per avid player, a value component and climate modifier. The Ladies Professional Golf Association held its inaugural event in Tampa. The Tampa Open was held at Palma Ceia Country Club. Climate & Coastline Tampa Bay, which is a regional term that includes the cities of Tampa, St. Petersburg and Clearwater, is actually a body of water. Tampa Bay is the largest open-water estuary in Florida. Though nearly 400 square miles, the Bay has an average depth of just 12 feet. Tampa Bay borders three counties with four major rivers flowing into it – Hillsborough, Alafia, Manatee and Little Manatee. According to the National Weather Service, Tampa Bay has an average of 361 days per year with some sunshine. In addition, Tampa has never officially recorded a temperature of 100 degrees or higher. The last time that Tampa suffered a direct hit by a hurricane was in 1921. The Tampa Bay region is home to 35 miles of white sand beaches on some 20 barrier islands along the Gulf of Mexico.
